Hello everyone. So it's just come out publicly that Captain America: Brave New World had some disastrous early screenings. I attended one of the screenings in Los Angels last weekend and I'm going to share my experience. I want to start off by saying that the film wasn't completely finished. There was still some CGI that needed to be done and there was no credits or post credit scenes. Some of the editing was a bit jarring, which was either because of incompetence from the filmmaker or because it wasn't completely finished.
The plot is very hard to follow and confusing so I'll try my best to describe it. It has the same political thriller aesthetic of the Winter Soldier and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but it's way more political in nature. The entire plot revolves around politics, the president and an election. The film starts off where FATWS ended, with Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) now established as the new Captain America. Bucky never appears and his absence is never explained. Sam visits a military training facility and bonds with some soldiers who just got back from an overseas mission. He meets an old friend, an hispanic guy named Joaquin (Danny Ramirez, dude from Top Gun) who he formally served with. Joaquin has been promoted to a lieutenant in the air force and is now their top pilot.
On the television at the facility, we get a news report about the president, Thunderbolt Ross. He was formally played by William Hurt in previous MCU movies, but since the actor has passed away they replaced him with Harrison Ford. Ross is now the president of the United States. However, the report reveals that he is deeply unpopular with the public and several of the veterans mock him. One of them calls him a "traitor to the country", although what he did specifically is never mentioned. There is an upcoming election and it seems almost impossible that Ross will be reelected. His political opponent is a black guy and he is very likely to be the next president. A montage of different late night show hosts mocking the president is shown. Yes, they actually made Ross into a proxy for Trump. The entire thing is just a Trump allegory. All the woke cringey politics of FATWS are back, because this film bafflingly kept the same writer.
The scene then cuts to Ross in a large scientific research facility, a secret bunker under the white house. He is upset that he probably won't be reelected and is desperate to find a way to turn the tides of the election. He summons Sam Wilson to the facility, and asks him to endorse him and campaign with him, but as the new Captain America he wishes to remain apolitical and doesn't want to approve any candidate. Ross calls him a traitor for not helping the president, Wilson just rolls his eyes and walks away. However, it's revealed the entire meeting was a trap set up by Ross and a "mysterious scientist": Wilson had to surrender his shield and all his weapons while he was talking to the president, and while his shield was away from him, the mysterious scientist scanned the shield and got a DNA reading of the former Captain America, Steve Rodgers, as the shield was formally his.
Ross and the scientist plan to use Steve Rodgers' DNA sample to recreate the super soldier serum and mass produce it, creating a massive unstoppable army that will be so impressive it will clinch him the election. However, the DNA imprint of Steve Rodgers is incomplete. They need help finishing the genome sequencing, or something like that. Like I said, the film was overly confusing and hard to follow. Ross calls up Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) who is now back to his human form. Ross wants Banner to help him complete the DNA sequence and volunteer his own superhuman DNA. Banner is disgusted by his presidency and refuses to help him.
In desperation, Ross calls up a relative of the Hulk, Jennifer aka She Hulk (Tatiana Maslan). At first Jennifer doesn't want to help Ross, but after he says that Bruce wouldn't help him, she changes her mind and decides to help, because she is upset at Bruce for ignoring her. Yes seriously, her motivation for helping the villain is literally just to spite Bruce for ignoring her. She is just as immature and awful as in her own show. She gives him a sample of her blood and the mysterious scientist combines her DNA with Steve Rodger's DNA and completes the super soldier serum.
After testing it on some rats, however, they discover that it is not stable and does not work as intended. There is no way the FDA will ever approve it for mass consumption. Angry and desperate, Ross decides to inject it directly into himself. To their surprise, it actually does work as intended, and makes him extremely powerful. The elderly Ross can now jump up several feet, lift incredibly heavy objects, run very fast, and is just as strong as Steve Rodgers. He decides to test his newfound abilities against the country's most dangerous criminal. I do not remember the character's name, it's something German and the criminal is played by Seth Rollins, the famous wrestler from the WWE.
Ross takes Rollins out of prison and offers him a full pardon for his crimes if he can defeat him in a battle. Rollins accepts. Rollins has super strength himself but is no match for Ross' new powers and is easily defeated in a hand to hand combat fight. The sequence is similar to the hand to hand fight at the start of the Winter Soldier - in that movie, they used real life UFC fighter Georges St-Pierre to play Batroc the Leaper - however, while that fight was grounded, realistic and gritty, this entire fight between Rollins and Ross is ridiculous. They awkwardly put Ford's CGI face on a body double and it looks incredibly silly and out of place. Seeing 80 year old Ford's face on a body doing super leaps and mega kicks is impossible not to laugh at. Rollins is no St-Pierre either, and his acting is cartoonish and stupid. The entire scene is laughable and dumb.
Eventually the super serum starts to effect Ross negatively; it turns his skin reddish and gives him disgusting protruding veins. It soon turns him into a giant, massive Hulk like monster, except he has red skin. Why his skin is red is never explained. He is simply referred to as Red Hulk by the mysterious scientist. Jennifer sees him as the monster and
transforms herself into She Hulk and tries to defeat him in a battle, but the Red Hulk has significantly more power than her. As he was created from both the DNA of Steve Rodgers and Bruce Banner, he has their powers combined and is stronger than either of them.
Jennifer swallows her pride and calls Bruce who shows up along with Sam Wilson. Bruce transforms into the Hulk but him and Captain America are no match for him and he easily defeats them both. The Red Hulk tries to kill the mysterious scientist and eventually escapes the facility. After the loss, Sam Wilson regroups and decides to try reform the Avengers once again. He attempts to get into contact with Nick Fury, Thor, Ant-man and Rhody all fail. None of the actors are actually shown on screen and it's implied they are all off on their own separate missions. Bruce then contacts Carol Denvers, aka Captain Marvel via cellphone; Brie Larson is not shown on screen and it's never explained how he had her contact. At the end of Shang Chi, it's revealed that Bruce and Carol were working together and wanted to recruit Shang-Chi, but this information is never explained to the viewer so some audience members were confused. Carol says that she can help send some reinforcements their way.
Why would they go through all that trouble of getting Cap's dna when they could get the super soldier serum 2.0 from US Agent? They probably should have his DNA on file.
Several superheroes show up at the bunker. Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) arrives first and is already familiar with Bruce. Then Moon Knight arrives (Oscar Issaac) and is permanently in his Moon Knight persona. I never watched that show so his entire character was confusing. Then a jewish lady named Sabra shows up, played by Shira Haas. I had never heard of this character before and who is she is never clearly explained. It is mentioned that she is working for the Israel government (I kid you not). The final hero to arrive is a black lady played by Xosha Roquemore. I have absolutely no idea who her character was either and I can't even remember the name of the character. Her superpowers are simple kinetic energy attacks, whatever she punches or kicks gets hit with an electic shock. Very basic and boring. The entire sequence of all these obscure superheroes arriving is absolutely ridiculous. The audience had no idea who any of these TV characters were and none of them received any kind of pop. People were expecting big names and all they got was a bunch of literal nobodies. You have an asian guy, an hispanic guy, a jewish lady and then a black lady. It was like some woke diversity squad Power Rangers moment. No reaction.
Sam Wilson calls ups his old military buddy Joaquin and gives him his old Falcon gear. Joaquin uses his top gun aviation knowledge to become the new Falcon. The new Avengers consists of Sam Wilson as Captain America, Joaquin as Falcon, Bruce Banner, She Hulk, Shang Chi, Moon Knight, Sabra and the random black lady.
The first thing they do is leak to the media that president Ross has turned into Red Hulk and tried to kill them. That destroys his image in the eyes of the public and ends any chance of him ever being reelected. In desperation, he decides to attack the US Capital Building. By destroying it, he hopes to inspire widespread fear and panic in America and cause a "Brave New World", where elections don't matter, and where the people will choose to follow him because of his incredible power. And yes, the entire plot really does revolve around the president attacking the Capital and starting an insurrection. It's just a thinly veiled metaphor for January 6. There's shots of inside the capital building with congress people hiding behind desks, panicking in fear, praying for their lives. It was so cringe and embarrassing I really couldn't believe it. It was worse than any of the political stuff in FATWS. I had heard they shot some of the film in Washington DC but I couldn't believe this is what that location filming was actually for.
The new Avengers find out about Ross' plan and have an argument. Some of them are too afraid to face Ross, as he is more powerful than any of them. It seems like a suicide mission. Faced with the overwhelming chance of death, the group disbands. Only Sam Wilson decides to go to the capitol building. He stands on the steps alone as he watches Ross, now larger and more muscular than ever, approaches him. He gives a speech where he talks about how he's been alone his whole life and has faced constant oppression but has never given up. The entire time, a hip-hop inspired remix of the Avengers theme plays. Yes, really. Not even the Captain America theme, but the Avengers theme.
Joaquin, suited up in his Falcon gear, flies up and stands beside Wilson. Then, Bruce Banner and Jennifer as humans walk up to him. Shang Chi, Moon Knight, Sabra and the black lady show up soon after. They all stand together in front of Red Hulk. The new Avengers spent a very long and boring 10 minute sequence arguing and disbanding, only to reunite five minutes later. The moment was not cool at all and was incredibly dumb. Wilson says "Avengers assemble" but the line is not earned in the slightest.
They all charge at Red Hulk. Bruce and Jennifer transform into Hulks and are the first to get to him but he quickly defeats them. A long battle sequence ensues but it's a complete mess. The editing is sloppy and confusing, lots of shaky cam and most of the characters barely do anything. Moon Knight literally does nothing. Only Shang-Chi and the black lady have the speed and combat ability to match Red Hulk. Shang-Chi puts up a good fight but eventually is overpowered. Sabra distracts Red Hulk and Bruce stabs him with a device he created; it siphons all the super serum out of his body, turning him back into just Ross who is now shriveled up and decrepit. The battle tries to match the epicness of the airport battle in Civil Way but is completely awful. The only characters who do anything are the minority characters and Sam Wilson is useless in his own movie.
It's revealed the whole thing was a plan orchestrated by the mysterious scientist. It turns out that he is... the Leader (Tim Blake Nelson). Unlike in the comics, The Leader does not have green skin or a huge bulging forehead (yet). He's sickly and dying. He's really nothing at all like the comic version. He double crossed Ross and had a mind altering substance put into the super soldier serum he ingested, which forced Ross to do his bidding. His plan culminates on the steps of the capital building; he always knew Ross would be defeated, so he had a sniper set up to assassinate Ross once his reputation was destroyed. Wilson leaps in front of Ross and saves him from the sniper bullet with his shield. This is supposed to be a big "heroic" moment, where Wilson decides to put his hatred of the president behind him and save him, proving himself as the new heroic Captain America, but like... it's so dumb. You're the hero, you're supposed to save the president, even if you hate him. Nothing about this is heroic. You didn't put your hatred behind you, you did what any decent person would do.
The new Avengers track down the Leader to his secret base in the Nevada dessert. It is revealed that the Leader was behind the nuclear explosion that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk. The Leader was also exposed to the nuclear fallout. He hates the Hulk because the explosion made Hulk strong and powerful, while all it did to him was make him weak and sickly. Obsessed with power, he injects himself with the new and improved super soldier serum and it transforms him into a giant hulking monster. His skin turns a pale green and his forehead bulges like in the comics, but the CGI on him looked horrendous compared to the other hulks. He also injects the serum into some of his goons and it turns them into hybrid hulk human creatures, half the size of a regular hulk but still incredibly powerful.
Shang-Chi, She Hulk, Sabra, Moon Knight and the black lady take on the goons, while Hulk, Sam Wilson and Joaquin take on the Leader. The goons and the Leader are eventually killed when his base detonates with them all inside it. The heroes escape through an underground tunnel. In the end, Ross is arrested for trying to cause an insurrection and is sent to prison where he meets Rollins again. The lady who plays Elaine in Seinfeld shows up, reprising her role from FATWS. She is working for the CIA and hired Sabra to be a spy to collect data on all the new Avengers. The black guy wins the election and this somehow makes the country happy again. He gives the medal of honor to Sam Wilson, Joaquin, Bruce, Jennifer and the black lady. Shang-Chi and Moon Knight disappear before the ceremony. Can't give too many medals to men, I guess. The new Avengers decide to go on a search for the missing Avengers, like Thor, Captain Marvel, Ant- man etc. The end.
Let me say, the entire movie is a complete mess. The editing is junky and sloppy and confusing. It's like some of the action scenes in Civil War but ten times worse. It was like the director had Parkinson's and the camera was shaking heavily during most action scenes, it reminded me of Quantum of Solace. Very hard to follow and confusing action almost always ruins an action movie. The political allegories are absolutely stupid and distract from the movie. Ross is an obvious Trump proxy and it's embarrassing that they tried to turn the movie into some Jan 6/insurrection metaphor. So dumb. I almost half expected one of the characters to say "red man bad" or "two serums" or some dumb shit.
Most of the characters do nothing and are just there to pad the cast. She Hulk does nothing but help the bad guy, Moon Knight does nothing at all, Wilson and Joaquin do nothing. It's embarrassing that Captain America does nothing in his own damn movie and is second fiddle to Shang-Chi and a bunch of women we know nothing about. Most of the characters backgrounds and motivations are never explained. It's barely even a Captain America movie, both villains are Hulk villains and the Leader's main motivation revolves around his hatred towards the Hulk, not Captain America. Hulk cucked Cap in his own movie and he barely does anything himself.
Ford's CGI swapped face looks ridiculous during his fight with Rollins, and the CGI on the Hulks was not up to par. The plot was slow, poorly paced, had way too much talking, was way too confusing too follow. The first action scene is nearly an hour into the movie. It got a very negative reaction from the rest of the audience. People were confused and nobody had any idea who all these obscure TV characters even were. I am not surprised they have to do extensive reshoots because the film is unreleasable in its current state. This might have been the worst Marvel movie I've ever seen. Again, the version they screened was not completely finished but I can't imagine how they could ever fix this shit. The film hardly makes sense. It just jumps from one weirdly stitched together scene to the next.
