Cut to Marvel credits with the Spider-Man theme in the background. Peter (suited up as Spider-Man) is on a date with M.J. when they are interrupted by the Daily Bugle bombshell that Peter Parker is indeed Spider-Man. Peter, alarmed, tries to swing them to safety but they are ambushed by the FBI, who take them into custody. We get a montage of others associated with Peter-namely Ned, Aunt May and Happy Hogan- being arrested. Peter is interrogated and tries to defend himself. In the other rooms, Ned, M.J., May and Happy are probed about their knowledge of Peter's double life. Peter spends the night in custody, where he is haunted by a dream about Mysterio, who taunts him for letting him die. The next day, Peter reunites with Aunt May, Happy, Ned, M.J. and Flash Thompson (who now resembles a Latino Zach Morris) in the station. Peter and Flash reconcile. Happy tells him that he's got an amazing lawyer.
We cut to Peter's court hearing, where he is being tried for Mysterio's murder. Matt Murdock (in his only scene in the film) is able to prove that Mysterio's video was doctored. Because of Peter's track record of being a Good Samaritan™, he is found not guilty. Peter and friends celebrate, but as they leave the courtroom, they are basically ambushed by Mysterio supporters who heckle and harass Peter, accussing him of murder (Remy Hii's character from FFH is among them). In school, Peter is ostracized from his peers and becomes the butt of many jokes from his teachers. Despite being advised against doing so for a while by Murdock, Peter once again suits up as Spider Man to stop a drug drealer, but gets splashed with green paint by a Mysterio supporter.
We get that rooftop scene between Peter and M.J. where he forlornly recounts the turn his life has taken. M.J. cheers him up by revealing that the results of the M.I.T (where they and Ned had applied to) applications are out in a few hours. They go to Ned's house and learn that the three of them have been rejected. Peter and M.J. visit an M.I.T administrator, who reveals that their proximity to the Mysterio case was what led to the decision.
Feeling guilty, Peter somberly stares at his suit at home. Upon glancing at a Halloween decoration reminiscent of a wizard, Peter is reminded of his connection with Dr. Strange and visits him at the Sanctum, pleading with him to conjure up a spell that makes the world forget that he is Spider-Man. Wong advises Strange not to do the spell, but Strange does it anyway, Peter keeps on interrupting, causing the spell to falter. A flustered Strange tells him that the spell failed and shooes him away. We cut to a portal opening in the middle of a road, with a drenched Otto falling out of it and looking around shocked. He stumbles off to an alley, where he sees a poster of Spider-Man (the same one from the first Morbius trailer).
Peter tracks down the M.I.T administrator (she's caught in a traffic jam on Queensboro bridge) and begs her to reconsider. All of a sudden, Otto appears out of nowhere and starts attacking the bridge. Peter suits up as the Iron Spider and fights him, though he is quickly overpowered by Otto's tentacles. Peter realizes that the tentacles are in control of Otto and tries to appeals to Otto's humanity. This almost works, but all of a sudden Green Goblin steps out of a portal, shocked to be alive, and begins fucking shit up with his pumpkin bombs. He sees Peter and starts cackling, humming the Itsy-Bitsy-spider rhyme. He pushes Otto away and starts hammering at Peter, eventually destroying the Iron-Spider suit. Strange appears and is able to capture them. Peter runs off and hides behind his school, when all of a sudden the Lizard bursts out of a nearby building. Peter suits up (this time around in the FFH suit) as he runs through the school alerting everyone to evacuate. M.J. and Ned ask him what's going on, before an explosion occurs in the auditorium- a burst of yellow lightning that reveals itself to be Electro. Peter attracts their attention to him and diverts them to an abandoned train station. Just as they are about to ambush him, Sandman appears out of nowhere and is able to knock them unconscious. Sandman returns to his human form (Flint Marko) and embraces Peter, thanking him for forgiving him (at the end of Spider-Man 3). Peter remarks that he doesn't know who he is. Strange deus-ex-machinas his way to the station and rounds the remaining villains up. A heavily wounded Peter stumbles off to a homeless shelter, where he spends the night.
The next day, Aunt May tends to Peter's wounds at home and gives him the "with great power comes great responsibility" speech. Ned and M.J. visit, and they inform him that Flash Thompson is in critical condition after sustaining severe injuries from the Lizard and Electro's attack on the school. Peter is overcome with guilt. The three of them visit the Sanctum. Ned and M.J. keep on touching things, which annoys Strange and he briefly imprisons them in a magical bind (played for laughs, but would be considered child abuse in real life). Strange explains the multiverse to Peter and reveals that the spell has somehow caused a fracture in it that has allowed for the villains to enter the MCU. Wanting to understand why the fractures are purely connected to Spider-Man, Strange brings Peter to this prison-cum-chamber in the Sanctum, where the Sinister Five (S5) are imprisoned. Norman agrees to speak to Peter alone, to which Strange reluctantly agrees. Norman reveals that the S5 were all plucked out of their realities right before being killed by Spider-Man, and says that if Strange were to send them back, they would die. He apologizes for the bridge attack and begs Peter to free them, promising that he will let Peter turn them into the legal system wanting to make things right, Peter unlocks their cells with the cube. The $5 burst out of the Sanctorum and tear their way through Times Square. Peter attempts to stop them, but is overpowered. Strange arrives when it's too late and, in a fit of rage, attacks Peter. Peter escapes into one of the portals Strange had opened up earlier in an attempt to capture Norman. Strange chases Peter through the multiverse and Peter eventually loses him, hiding In someone's house.
Peter peruses through the house and discovers a briefcase belonging to Ben Parker. Uncomfortable, Peter tries to leave the house before he bumps into Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker. Alarmed, Peter swings off. Andrew suits up and chases him across the city, closining in on him on a rooftop. Andrew asks asks Peter who he is, to which Peter unmasks and replies, "I am you."
Meanwhile in the MCU, the S5 are tearing their way through Times Square, alarming civillians, before ending up in an abandoned Stark Industries facility. Otto asks Norman what his plan to get them back home is, to which Norman reveals that he has none and that the only way they can survive is to remain in the MCU. Norman proposes that they eradicate Spider-Man and take control of New York, allowing them to ward off any other attempts to take them out. Otto suggests that they build a fusion reactor and use it as a means to take NYC hostage, threatening to use it should anyone attempt to besiege the city. When asked what could power such a device, Otto turns sinisterly (heh) to an arc reactor flickering in this glass-case-thingy, saying that he knows what to do. Marko refuses to join them and is stabbed through the stomach by Norman.
Peter and Andrew sit on the rooftop and reminisce about being Spider-Man. Andrew reveals his guilt around failing to save Gwen Stacey and Harry Osborn. Peter tells Andrew about his identity being leaked and that he messed up, allowing multiversal villains to escape to NYC. Upon realizing that among them are Electro and the Lizard, Andrew agrees to join Peter in the MCU to take them out. Suddenly, a portal opens on the rooftop and Ned walks out, revealing that he had pocketed Strange's sling ring. They return to the MCU and together, they track the Lizard's giant footprints to the abandoned Stark Industries facility. There, they find a mortally wounded Marko, who tells them about the S5's plan. Andrew swings off to get Marko medical attention, while Peter swings off to the Sanctum.
Outside the Sanctum, Peter apologizes to Strange. Strange gives Peter the "two lives" speech, advising Peter not to let the emotions of Peter Parker conflate with his duties as Spider-Man. After their reconciliation, Peter says something like, "Oh, there's one more thing" and then Andrew pops up. Strange sighs. May, M.J., Ned and Happy move into the Sanctum for protection. Peter, Andrew and Strange devise a plan to take down the S5. Strange suggests that they get more help and is flustered when he can't find his sling ring. Ned fishes it out of his pocket and opens up a portal. Peter and Andrew walk into it, entering the Raimiverse. They track down Tobey Maguire, who has retired from being Spider-Man and lives with M.J. (Kirsten Dunst is in the movie!) and his daughter, May. Tobey is reluctant to join them because of his injuries and family commitments but upon further reflection, does so anyway because he is a Good Samaritan" and they return to the MCU, Strange meditates to figure out where the S4 are, and everyone else hangs out. There are a few cool character moments here- M.J. has a few lines about how tall and attractive Andrew is, Tobey catches up on the MCU and is shocked to learn that some of his favourite childhood comic heroes are real, Tobey asks Tom about his relationship with Uncle Ben etc. There is no recreation of the finger-point meme in the cut that I saw.
The S4 are in New York, hiding in an underground bunker beneath the Statue of Liberty (which now holds a Captain America shield). Otto is constructing the reactor. The three Spider-Men swing into the city and confront the $4. Strange stayed behind to protect the Sanctum, lest the S4 try to break into it. It's basically Tom VS Norman, Andrew VS Electro and Tobey VS Otto. Lizard just runs around and destroys stuff. Of course, there is some interplay between the characters and Tobey and Norman do have a brief fight where Norman taunts him about Uncle Ben's death. Watching the attack unfold on her phone in the Sarctum, an anxious May pockets Strange's sling ring and runs off to the city, hoping to use it against the S4 attacking her son. She manages to capture Lizard and Electro, who just vanish into a portal. She throws the sling ring to Peter, who catches it with his web and uses it to capture Otto, preventing him from enabling the reactor. Andrew and Tobey finally are able to destroy the reactor. Enraged, Norman attacks May. Peter chases after him but is too late, and she is killed. Peter is overcome with grief and furiously beats up Norman. Just as he is about to strike the killing blow, he is stopped by Tobey and Andrew, who reconcile him as he mourns over her dead body.
We cut to May's funeral. Tobey, Andrew, M.J., Ned, Happy, a wheelchair-bound Flash and Strange are in attendance. Peter tearfully gives a speech about responsibility, kindness and heroism. After this scene, we cut to Peter in the sanctum, where he bids farwell to Tobey and Andrew, who return to their normal lives in their respective universes. Strange and Peter have a heart-to-heart, after which Strange reattempts the spell, this time without Peter interrupting. A few days later, Peter returns to school for a Christmas party. There is no more jeering, or photos being taken of him etc. anymore- everyone has forgotten that he is Spider-Man. Peter and Ned talk about university admissions-Ned is going to M.I.T., while Peter decides to stay behind. Peter tries to strike a conversation with M.J., but she has forgotten about their relationship and brushes him off. Peter returns home sorowfully and suits up as Spider-Man. He visits Uncle Ben and Aunt May's graves and swings off into the city!
